What's up To all my C.V's out there. I would like to
give a strong shout out to the Umass Amherst CVSA for thier
wonderful Cape Verdean Cultural event held this previous
weekend. The event was a beautiful display of the Cape Verdean youth
taking pride in themselves and expressing thier heritage. Also i would
like to give a strong shoutout to all other CVSA's who partook in the activities.
Events like this are what the Cape verdean youth must continue to do
to not only prove to ourselves and our elders that we are a productive
force in society but that can also be our medium to prove it to the world.

Just want to enter my name in the visitor's book and see what will happen. Maybe someone will recognize the name and e-mail me back. I use to live in Newport, Rhode Island. My mother's maiden name was Andrews/Andrade. Her parents were Manuel and Alice Andrews. I know some of the history of her family but need to make sure I'm clear on the island they came from. My grandparents have passed and so has my mother. I wish I had paid more attention when they would talk about their family, but it wasn't important then. I'm very interested in learning more about my family. Maybe someone can help. I've been in touch with one of my counsins and she told me about a Cape Verdean Organization in Southern California that she belongs to. She sent me a copy of their newsletter. I found it very interesting and also recognized some of the names of islands they talked about. I live in Coppell, which is about 20 mins or so from Dallas, Tx and would like to know if there might be a Cape Verdean Organization in this area or close by. I also have two cousins who visited Fogo. Their names are Tim and David Johnson. They also visited Mosteiros. They wrote a article about their visit. It was really interesting. Would love to hear from fellow Cape Verdeans.

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
It is a pleasure to know that you all are helping those back home who so desperately need our assistance. It is true: that once I was in the same predicament. Unfortunately, coming here at a young age and experiencing racism, I had to put about thinking about this serious problem. At Umass/Amherst, the majority of Cape Verdeans could not understand the deep impact of racism on the African heritage people here and felt the proclaiming our blackness or rather Africanness negated our Cape Verdeanness. I have come to realized that they are sadly mistaken and they we here in the USA must forged links with other Black folk here as well as the motherland itself; particularly, Cabo Vere. The Nos Ku Nos mentality is too isolationist and a psychological complex due to our geographical location and our particular history. Anyway, it my hope that we can return to the source, Africa, as Amilcar Cabral emphasized to rid of the colonial mentality. Now we face the danger of a neo-colonial mentality the resultant of the lusotropicalism propaganda used by Salazar, Caetano, and the other lackeys of the colonial and neocolonial domination. I feel that there are a lot of symtomps of our psychological complex due to the ravages of colonialism and the advent of neocolonial, that Frantz Fanon was so brilliant in examining, that we have not taken a serious examination, at least, from my humble opinion, experience, and the limitations of my knowledge base. Just like the rest of Africa, the official used by the government is the colonizer's language.
Nevertheless, I commend all those who have given their time, ideas, and energy to helping those Cabo Verdianas back home the chance to realize their dormant or latent capabilities. Let's just vibe so more on our psychological complex a little more.

Sou alemão e um amigo de Cabo Verde. Já fui três vezes visitar
as ilhas e penso voltar outra vez para ver também as ilhas de
Maio e S. Nicolão que ainda não conheco. Em 1993 conheci um
Caboverdeano na Ilha de Brava que encontrei em seguida outras
vezes em Praia /Santiago e em Mindelo /S. Vicente. Ali em Mindelo
ele quis instalar um palco/teatro no antigo edifcio da Alfândega.
Parece-me que ele estava a trabalhar para o ministério de Cultura de
Cabo Verde nessa altura. Gostaria muito ter a sua direcção e

I think you are being talked about as winning the Cabo verdean Pultzer Prize for story telling in the 20th century. Hey John what Island were your folk from? Is it true that you graduated from University Of Fogo;please explain that to us.

It is very interesting to know that there is as many creoles on
the web than one is to think. I am a student at Bristol Community
College and I was upset to hear that they didn't have a Cape Verdean
Club here. I had spoke to the senate and there will be one being
established for the fall semester and I will be the president. Please

Excuse me,Excuse me!

Please can any one tell me if we still have a Embassy and a staff in Washington DC. I have requested on many occasions some information,not once have they ever responded. I check into the matter and have been told by many that they have the same problem.

Is their some way this can be corrected, It is common courtesy to at least let people know that you got their mail. I have said many times
information is education. If the Caboverdean people are not informed how can we have unity. What I was told by a dear and good Caboverdean they don't want to be bothered unless money is involved;I DO NOT CHOOSE TO THINK THAT;I hope that I am proven wrong.

If any one will take the time to read The CaboVerdean Constitution;article 7 (task of The State) they do have a responsibility to the CaboVerdean people here in the United Staes Of America.

Here we take democracy very serious. If we do have an Embassy please let us get our act together if we in fact want UNITY IN OUR STRUGGLE.

Hi Fellow Cape Verdeans,
I'm in the U.S. Air Force stationed in England. I'm from Cape Cod. I am very interested in finding more about my families background. My grandfather Anibal J. Lopes came from Cape Verde in the 1800's and settled on the Cape. He worked with the railroad and later owned and harvested various cranberry bogs. My mothers parents who are Perry's also from Cape Verde. I'd be interested in hearing from any other Lopes'who may be distant cousins. Great site! Cape Verdeans Unite!

Também vi o filme "Fintar o destino" na viagem de avião da TAP da Ilha do Sal para Lisboa em 31 de Março deste ano. É um filme emocionante. Devo dizer que durante a exibição houve um silêncio total no avião e senti que ficàmos impressionados pela força desse destino que é o sonho de uma vida melhor e a realidade que nos esmaga.
A luta dos Kabuverdianos por uma vida melhor é merecedora da nossa admiração, respeito e solidariedade.

Adoro esta página, pessoal. Aqui "nô djunta mon". Adoro sítios onde se pode
utilizar crioulo. Nasci em Lisboa, mas os meus pais são de Vila Nova de Sintra
(Brava). Adoro Cabo Verde. Gostaria de protestar contra certas burocracias
que, em meu entender, são uma das principais causas do atraso em que
se encontra Cabo Verde. Exemplificando, um primo meu que é construtor
em Portugal, quis investir em Cabo Verde em infraestruturas turísticas
e pediu que lhe concedessem a classificação de investidor externo (para usufruir
de benefícios fiscais). Toda a gente lhe dizia que sim... e depois não
conseguia nada !!! Acabou por desistir de voltar a Cabo Verde.
Gostaria de protestar contra as pessoas que não fazem e nem deixam fazer !!!

Last night my son and daughter took me to see a special film at the
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City,
"FINTAR O DESTINO" / Dribbling Fate. What a FANTASTIC experience!
The 82 minute feature length film was completed by a young
Portuguese director Fernado Vendrell in 1997. The action
takes place in Mindelo, Sao Vicente and Lisboa. It's a story
about coming to terms with the disappointed dreams of youth.
The film was awarded the Grand Prize at the 1998 Naples Film Festival.
The Cape Verdean Institute for Film (Praia) cooperated in the production
of the film. All of the actors were essentially non-professionals. Local
musician Carlos Germano, was the lead actor. The direction is beautifully
understood throughout; even in the quietest scenes, one is always
aware of the powerful emotional currents running just below the
surface.

For me, this film accurately captures the subtleties, complexities
and contradictions of a slice of the Cape Verdean experiece. The
actors were all Cape Verdeans, they spoke in the Crioulo of Sao Vicente,
virtually any Cape Verdean could relate to the characterizations.
One comes away "not feeling sorry" for anyone in the movie but deeply
moved by the strength of each character and the shere power of the
Cape Verdean landscape/seascape on which this story is told. Me and
my kids came away from the flick filled with that very special and
satifying pride that comes from the knowledge that one has just
been deeply touched by an encounter with the "morbeza de nos povo."

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved in the production! I asked the
director about distribution plans and he told me that they are only
now beginning to talk to distributors in Portugal but hoped that one
day the film would be available at least for showings in our immigrant
communities in the USA.

The film played to a packed house at the Museum on its "one night
stand". My daughter came across the notice in the NY Times by accident.
I didn't seen another CV in the place. The Museum officials said they
didn't know that there was a CV community in greater New York, etc. etc.
blah, blah!

If anyone ever gets word of the reappearance of this film or other works
of particular interests to Cape Verdeans, don't hold back!! Post the
information on the home page and tell your friends.

Especially those who choose to take all the right steps in the advancement of our culture. As of recent it seems that Cape Verdeans have obtained a reputation as being unproductive towards society. Frankly I also feel that there are some individuals as a matter of fact many who help to defame our character. Myself at times included among the many.The key is to realize that you can be a positve representation of your culture. How first you must ask of yourself what direction would I like to point my country towards. You the individual can decide whether you would like to be involved politically or socially towards the advancement of Cape Verde whether Domestic or abroad. it is also you who are responsible for setting the proper examples for our youth to follow. Last you must realize that it takes a special person to be Cape Verdean and realize that you are that special person. I'm traveling to Cabo Verde in July and would like to find some
information concerning luggage taxes, and 'issues'. By 'issues'
I'm reffering to the recent problems of 'disappearing' luggage.
I would like to know the weight limit for carry-on luggage
(so that this doesn't become a problem) and anyway I can
make sure that my luggage gets transported on the same flight I travel
on (seems luggage 'disappears' when they are transported on different
flights). Any links to Cabo Verde
airport safety and regulations would be
greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to locate information on my Grandfather, Antonio Gomes without little or no success. A response from the National Archives gives me an Antonio Gomes (16) from Mate, Brava arriving via the Diana on May 14, 1913 in New Bedford, MA. HE and a Jose Martin SIlva were going to their "aunt" Maria Gonsalves Tgnacis (spelling not clear) on 37 S 2nd Street, New Bedford. Could not find Maria Gonsalves in the 1920 Soundex, but now realize that I needed to look under the married name Tgnacis (another trip to the Archives is due). According to a 1925 NY State Census states that Antonio arrived here in 1915 at age 15 but I have not been able to document that. I am told that he died between 1935-38 in Roxbury, but believe that he actually died in Freeport, NY where he married and had 3 children. Though the children were raised by a maternal relative after the death of his wife in 1929. No other information is known and I would like to make the Antonio from Brava mine, but need more documentation Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
