Topic: “VLSI Design for Communication Systems: Receiver and Decoder Designs”
Wireless communications have been growing exponentially and become ubiquitous in the past decade. Behind the scene, VLSI technology is an important driving force that enables these low-power high-performance devices, such as smartphones and base stations. In this talk, we will discuss two key technical areas in VLSI design for wireless communications. One is the receiver design that is to detect the symbols from the received signals. A system-on-chip architecture for MMO detector will be presented as a case study. In addition, a belief-propagation based receiver design for sparse channel will be discussed. Another key area of communication systems is error correction coding that is to recover the data with corrupted bits. Low-density parity-check code (LDPC) is a complex but powerful technique. VLSI design for high-throughput, rate-compatible LDPC decoders will be presented. Other recent projects at the Embedded Computing Lab at WPI will also be discussed briefly.
Dr. Xinming Huang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, MA. He received his PhD in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech. Previously he was a Member of Technical Staff with the wireless advanced technology laboratory, Bell Labs of Lucent Technologies. His research interests are in the areas of circuits and systems, with emphasis on reconfigurable computing, wireless communications, and embedded systems. Dr. Huang was among the recipients of the DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2007, the IBM Faculty Fellowship Award in 2004, and the Central Bell Labs Annual Excellence and Teamwork Award in 2002.
