The exhibition will focus on a number of concepts based around architect Paul Rudolph’s Design: • Modernism Redux: Paul Rudolph Design for the UMass Dartmouth Campus
• Modernism: Embrace the Future and Reject Tradition
• Good Modern Design and American Consumerism
• Modernism and Social Revolution
• Modernism and the Landscape
• UMass Dartmouth Today and what will be in the Future
Paul Rudolph (1918-1997) was one of the leading architects in America in the 1950s and 60s. His fame spanned the time between the eras of the so-called International School and Postmodernism. His architecture was noteworthy for its unique individual style evident in all his projects. UMass Dartmouth’s campus was conceived by Rudolph in 1963 and completed in 1972 as a utopian campus community. Today it remains as a unique example of late 20th century architectural exuberance and optimism.
