|Date & Time:||
from 06:00 PM to 08:00 PM
|Location:||Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives|
The Ferrerira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives will host the opening of an exhibit featuring a collection of “Presépios de Lapinha”, a type of nativity scene typical of the Island of São Miguel in the Azores.
Dr. Memory Holloway, a professor of art history who specializes in Portuguese art, will provide a short overview of this traditional art form, which goes back to the 16th century.
The pieces exhibited were executed by a group of women who learned this traditional craft at a course taught by Margarida Silva, an artisan who came expressly from the Azores to teach it. The course was sponsored by Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra, an institution dedicated to the preservation of Azorean history and culture.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
