TITLE: "Synthesis and Investigation of Molecules Inspired By Nature"
ABSTRACT: Our group takes inspiration from molecules found in nature, specifically carbohydrates and macrocyclic natural products. We then design and synthesize analogs of these types of compounds. This effort has included the development of new synthetic methods and the discovery of new types of organic reactions. Once the compounds are synthesized, we characterize their structures through computational, spectroscopic and crystallographic methods. We further characterize the biological function of the new compounds. One case study will be an extended investigation on ring expanded carbohydrates called septanoses and their ability to be bound by proteins whose normal function is to bind natural sugars. The work has implications on the development of new antibiotic drugs. |
