Moderator Anna Dempsey, Professor from the College of Visual & Performing Arts, will help to reveal the design philosophy behind the innovative renovation and addition to the library with architects Robert Miklos and Ben Youtz from designLAB; Jonathan Austin and Jennifer McGrory from Austin Architects; Grattan Gill, a member of the original Paul Rudolph design team; and Catherine Fortier-Barnes, Assistant Dean of Library Services. A photo essay created by the College of Visual and Performing Arts students will focus on the campus’ design today and for the future. A discussion between students, architects, and audience will follow the panel.

Presenting CVPA students: Seth R Abrahamson, Ashleigh Mota, Conor Szarek, Katherine A. Mrazik

UMass Dartmouth Claire T. Carney Library was conceived in 1963 as a utopian campus community by the celebrated 20th century architect Paul Rudolph and remains a unique example of late 20th century architectural exuberance and optimism. Completed in 1972, the "cast in place" concrete Claire T. Carney Library is the centerpiece of the concentric campus plan. designLAB architects and Austin Architects have undertaken a three-year, $45 million renovation/addition to the 160,000 square feet library that involves the new "campus living room," with its fifty-foot-tall windows, coffee tables, low bookcases and even two working fireplaces, while reclaiming natural light and re-introducing the original lively color palette.

Tours of the Claire T. Carney Library will be available at 11:30 AM, 1:15pm and 3:15pm.
