| Description: | Title: Modeling Double-Degenerate Type Ia Supernovae Kevin Jumper Abstract: Type Ia Supernovae are the thermonuclear detonations of white dwarfs. These explosions are notable for being standard candles, meaning that measurements of their apparent luminosities can be used to determine cosmological distances, which was essential to the discoveries of the accelerating expansion of the universe and dark energy. Thermonuclear supernovae are also believed to occur in binary systems, but the identity of the white dwarf's companion in such a system has been the subject of much debate. I am studying the merger of a pair of white dwarfs using both the results of a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code and an adaptive mesh refinement code, FLASH. Particular attention will be given to determining the conditions necessary to produce a thermonuclear detonation within the merged object. | |
