UMass Dartmouth Student-Athletes Earn Academic Honors

More than one in four UMass Dartmouth student-athletes earned academic honors in spring 2006

DARTMOUTH, MA--One in four UMass Dartmouth athletes have achieved academic honors this fall, continuing an upward trend and illustrating the focus that Corsair coaches place on the link between academics and athletics

Each semester during the school year, the UMass Dartmouth Department of Athletics announces its list of academic achievements by the top student-athletes on campus.  As an NCAA Division III institution, UMass Dartmouth places the highest priority on the student-athlete model where academics come first, followed by athletic participation and other campus activities.

One hundred forty five student-athletes from 22 different teams earned academic distinction during the Spring 2006 semester.  Of the students who received honors, 30 were named to the Chancellor's List with a grade point average of at least 3.8 (on a scale of 4.0), while the remaining 115 students were named to the Dean's List with a GPA of at least 3.2 or better.  The 115 students named to the Dean's List marks the tenth consecutive semester more than one hundred student athletes achieved that recognition.

The 145 student-athletes who earned academic honors represent 27% of the student-athletes who competed for 25 varsity sports teams last season.  Among the academic award winners, the Corsairs' football team had 22 players earn academic honors, tops among all UMass Dartmouth teams UMass Dartmouth's women's swimming and diving and women's soccer teams were tied for second with 12 each. The women's soccer team took top honors in Chancellor's List students with six.

"The UMass Dartmouth Department of Athletics views academic achievement as the highest priority for each and every student-athlete," said Athletic Director Louise Goodrum.  "In order to achieve the combined goal of being a successful student-athlete, the Athletic Department is proud to have developed solid working relationships between faculty, staff and coaches.  Congratulations and thanks to everyone who has played a role in the academic success of our student-athletes.
