Class of 2011 biggest ever

UMass Dartmouth will welcome its largest freshman class in its history to campus Labor Day weekend.

A total of 1,622 first-year students will enter UMass Dartmouth this fall, an increase of six percent over last year. The campus will also welcome 439 transfer students, a nine percent increase over last year, with most of the transfers coming from Bristol Community College.

The freshman class will come from 219  Massachusetts communities, 18 states and 6 countries will comprise the class of 2011. About 95 percent of the students come from Massachusetts.

Cities and towns with the largest number of students heading for UMass Dartmouth this year include: New Bedford (129), Fall River (70), Boston (62), Taunton (45), Westport (35), Plymouth (29), Fairhaven (29), Dartmouth (27).

The freshmen class is 54 percent male and 46 percent female.

The high school grade point average for the incoming class is 3.06 while the average SAT score is 1076.
