UMass Dartmouth announces Fall Music Series

Free on-campus concerts at UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Arts this fall include performances in memory of late colleague Rick Britto

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is holding its annual Afternoon Concert Series this fall, and the Performance Jam Session series will be in honor of the late CVPA faculty member Rick Britto.

Britto was a renowned jazz saxophonist and longtime music educator, both at UMass Dartmouth and Wheaton College. A New Bedford native, he passed away suddenly last August, depriving the area of a teacher, mentor and musician whose influence extends beyond Southeastern Massachusetts, and who is sorely missed.

"The unique musical voice of Rick Britto will be sorely missed in the world of jazz," said Marcelle Gauvin, a lecturer in the Department of Music at UMass Dartmouth and lifelong friend.

"He was a master teacher, an internationally-respected composer and saxophonist and a generous human being," she added. "His life celebrated the art of improvisation in its highest form. His contributions to his community and his students are beyond measure and always based in love."

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call Michelle Cieto in the Department of Music at the details above.
