Dartmouth, MA (November 12, 2013) -- UMass Dartmouth Senior and lifelong New Bedford resident, Josh Amaral, was elected to the New Bedford School Committee. At age 20, Amaral becomes the youngest official in New Bedford history to hold elected office.
As a political science and crime and justice student, Josh became committed to a project through the UMass Honors program examining the New Bedford Public School system, and in the process, became increasingly interested and involved in the debate over public education reform. Josh, alongside a group of loyal supporters, worked tirelessly to spread a message that New Bedford schools have tremendous potential that can be unlocked with common sense, careful thought, and vocal leadership.
The political newcomer finished second among the field to earn his seat on the school committee. The entire UMass Dartmouth community congratulates Josh and wishes him the best of luck as he begins his journey into elected public service.
