UMass Dartmouth announced today a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the University's groundbreaking in the Town of Dartmouth. While the University's proud history dates back to 1895, 50 years ago, on June 14, 1964, civic and education leaders broke ground in Dartmouth to create Paul Rudolph's 710-acre architectural vision of an academic utopia. Now, in 2014, as the Town of Dartmouth is celebrating its 350th anniversary, UMass Dartmouth will celebrate its 50th in the town.
"It's an exciting time for us to look back at our history as we prepare for an exciting future,'' said Chancellor Divina Grossman. We owe so much to the leaders, visionaries and groundbreakers who believed in the idea of an anchor institution for the region. Joining with our host community to celebrate two momentous anniversaries is going to be both fun and exciting for us all."
"I look forward to celebrating two historic milestones for our community. Both symbolize a commitment to educational, civic, and economic achievement and UMass Dartmouth has been an essential partner in these endeavors," said Dartmouth Town Administrator David Cressman. "The celebratory events planned represent a time to appreciate our history and the shared successes of the people and places that make up this wonderful community."
UMass Dartmouth 50th Anniversary celebratory events and festivities include:
-- Freedom Festival featuring community and campus performance groups, July 3
-- 50 photos for 50 years, Fall Semester
-- 50 hours of service pledge campaign, Fall Semester
-- Participation in Dartmouth's 350th Parade, September 7
-- Blue and Gold Celebration, September 19
-- Dedication of Chancellor Jean MacCormack Plaque on Leadership Walkway, September 19
-- Campus scavenger hunt, September 19
-- Homecoming with 50th anniversary theme, September 20
Last week, Chancellor Grossman was joined by local officials and members of the University community for a commemorative photo to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Three displays containing historical documents and items commemorating the 1964 groundbreaking are also available for viewing in the Library lobby.
