UMass Dartmouth announces new evening part-time scholarship program

Success by Degrees program to assist qualified community college graduates

Author:  Nancy Vanasse
Date:  July 31, 2007
Department:   Professional & Continuing Education
UMass Dartmouth's Division of Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) has announced the new Success by Degrees program. This program is designed to award qualified community college graduates a scholarship equal to a 33% tuition reduction for each course taken to complete a bachelor's degree through UMass Dartmouth PCE. This amounts to a savings of approximately $183 per three-credit course. This program matches the scholarship available to community college graduates enrolled in full-time day programs.

"Success by Degrees recognizes the rising prices of higher education and the direct impact that has on accessibility to complete a degree," states Dr. Susan Lane, Associate Vice Chancellor of Professional & Continuing Education. In today's competitive marketplace, a minimum job requirement generally requires an undergraduate degree. According to Dr. Lane, "The overall objective of this program is to raise the level of educational attainment on the SouthCoast."

To qualify for the Success by Degrees program, students must obtain an associate's degree from a community college; graduate from a community college with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; submit a UMass Dartmouth PCE application within one year of graduating from their community college; and answer "yes" to the question on the application, "Applying for Success by Degrees Program?".

Once matriculated at UMass Dartmouth PCE, qualified students will be eligible for the Success by Degrees program for four years as long as they maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7. This program applies to the following degrees: Accounting, General Business, History, Liberal Arts, Management, Psychology and Sociology (General or Criminal Justice options).

Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2007 semester. Applications are available at your local Community College's Transfer Office. For more information, contact a UMass Dartmouth PCE Academic Advisor at 508-999-8071. You can also attend an Information Session on Tuesday, August 7th from 4:00-6:30 pm in the Library Browsing Area on the main campus (parking is available in lot 13).??Degree information through Professional & Continuing Education is available online at www.umassd.edu/pce.
