Gloria Steinem on campus February 7
Influential women's movement leader will moderate afternoon panel and speak at fundraising dinner to initiate the Women's Studies Endowment
Gloria Steinem, a founding member of Ms. Magazine and influential writer and leader of the 2nd wave of the women's liberation movement, will moderate an afternoon panel discussion and be the keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner at UMass Dartmouth on February 7.
"We are honored to have a person who has meant so much to the history and evolution of women's issues joining us for these events,'' the Student Senate, which is a sponsor of the event, said in a statement. "We look forward to hearing Ms. Steinem's thoughts about women's issues today and the progress that is still ahead of us. The Student Senate is proud to be one of the sponsors for Ms. Steinem's visit."
"Three Decades of Empowering and Education," is an event designed to initiate a Women's Studies endowment scholarship fund to benefit students from the SouthCoast region and support the work of the Women's Resource Center.
This day-long event provides an opportunity to highlight the history of both the Women's Studies Program and the Women's Resource Center and allows students and the community to meet this well-known figure in 20th century American history.
Ms. Steinem will moderate a panel of women's studies and women's resource center alumni. The panel will address the importance of civic engagement and activism, and is open to all students, faculty, staff, and the community. The panel discussion is in the university's main auditorium from 2-3:30 p.m. Ms. Steinem is also scheduled to attend a reception for donors and is the keynote speaker at the fundraising dinner.
The fundraising dinner, which is sold out, will be held at the Woodland Commons Community Center on campus and is sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, the Student Senate, the Women's Studies Program, and the Women's Resource center with support from various departments on campus.
