Visiting Faculty Fellow Anthony Julian Tamburri to present lecture highlighting Italian-American culture, history
Dr. Anthony Julian Tamburri, UMass Dartmouth's first Visiting Faculty Fellow, will present a public lecture on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in the Board of Trustees Room located in the Foster Administration Building. Parking is available in lot 7.
Dr. Anthony Julian Tamburri, UMass Dartmouth's first Visiting Faculty Fellow, will present a public lecture on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in the Board of Trustees Room located in the Foster Administration Building. Parking is available in lot 7.
Tamburri, professor of Italian and comparative studies and dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College of the City University of New York, will be on campus April 29-30 and is expected to meet with students, faculty and others to discuss Italian-American culture, history and art throughout his visit.
Former UMass Dartmouth Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Louis Esposito established The John and Mary Esposito Visiting Faculty Fellowship in Italian-American Culture and History Program in honor of his parents. John and Mary Esposito were first generation American citizens whose Italian ancestry traces to Naples and Sicily, respectively. They instilled in each of their three children the importance of education and an appreciation of Italian culture and history.
Tamburri's books include Of Saltimbanchi and Incendiari: Aldo Palazzeschi and Avant-Gardism in Italy; To Hyphenate or not to Hyphenate: the Italian/American: Or, An "Other" American?; A Reconsideration of Aldo Palazzeschi's Poetry: Revisiting the "Saltimbanco," Italian/American Short Films & Videos: A Semiotic Reading; and many others. Additionally, he has edited and authored dozens of books, journals and other publications and is the recipient of several awards and grants from the Italian Consulate of Miami, National Italian American Foundation and Association of Italian American Educators.
The current president of the American Association of Teachers of Italian received his degrees from Southern Connecticut State (BS, Italian & Spanish), Middlebury College (MA, Italian), and the University of California Berkeley (Ph.D., Italian & Spanish). He has taught Italian and Spanish at the high school level and Italian language and literature at Smith, Middlebury and Auburn, and Italian and Italian/American Studies at Purdue, before moving to Florida Atlantic where he served first as chair of languages and linguistics and then associate dean for research, graduate and interdisciplinary studies as well as director of the Ph.D program in comparative studies.
