Since 1991 under Schweidenback's leadership, P4P has rescued more than 115,000 bikes, 1,000 sewing machines, and $11 million in spare parts from overburdened U.S. landfills, and shipped them to poor people in 32 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. More than 116,000 poor families are living better lives because they have the simple mobility of a bike - to get to a job, to attend school, to receive medical attention. P4P's work with overseas partners to maintain the bikes has helped develop local economies in some of the poorest countries around the globe.
CNN is recognizing the important contribution that Schweidenback and P4P have made in the last 17 years - to communities and families in developing countries and to the environment in the U.S. and around the globe.
