UMass-Dartmouth Portuguese professor Christopher Larkosh appeared on the
NBC Today Show this morning, as part of a special segment highlighting the
Azores Islands and Portuguese-American immigration to Southeastern New
England. As part of this report, he spoke briefly about the economic and
cultural reasons for new arrivals from the Azores at the latter half of
the 19th century.
Now in its 56th year, the NBC Today Show remains one of the most widely
watched shows on network television in the US, with approximately 6
million daily viewers.
Prof. Larkosh joined the faculty of the Department of Portuguese in the
fall of 2007, and since then he has designed and taught numerous new
courses in literature and culture, including students in the newly
instituted Ph. D. program in Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies and theory,
specializing on the literary and cultural relations between
Portuguese-Americans in the region and the rest of the Portuguese-speaking
world.
He is also currently the Director of the UMD Summer Program in Portuguese,
