Our second week of the semester is underway and it has been great to see all of you again. I have been out and about and stopping in to some offices and classes. I can see and hear the buzz of activity and interaction that tells me teaching and learning are well underway.
Faculty are telling me that new students give them new energy, and certainly our new students seem enthusiastic about exploring everything that is before them. Despite lines in various places and some parking pressure at selected times, we seem to have settled into the new semester quite well.
Last Friday's football season kicked off under the lights and was a tough loss after fighting hard through five overtimes. I was glad to see the great crowd and the strong support for the team. What happens outside of class time is also a key part of the UMD experience. Good Luck to the coaches and teams competing this week.
We also had a great kick off to a new partnership with the Ocean Explorium at New Bedford Seaport where we announced our support and collaboration with this exciting new effort to make science come alive for teachers, students and the public. There are details on the Website, but I hope you will get to visit this great new technology venue
On Friday the 12th I will be a panelist in a Forum sponsored by Artworks at the Corson Building in New Bedford and will be talking about our experience of bringing the Arts downtown and what it means for the community and for the University.
Now we have the Arts and Science in the city--we except many good things to happen.
On Wednesday we will have the New Faculty/Librarian Tea (and soft drinks too!) in the Library browsing area at 3:30. Please come to meet and welcome our talented new colleagues to this community.
New ideas, new energy aligned with your wisdom and experience will certainly bring great things to our academic life together.
