The event will take place on Wednesday, February 18 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. in the Woodland Commons Community Center on campus.
The main speaker will be Dr. Maria Manuela Aguiar, president of the organization Associação da Mulher Migrante, former Portuguese delegate to the European Union and Secretary of Emigration and Portuguese Communities Abroad. Dr. Aguiar will be joined by Dr. António Pacheco of Fundação ProDignitate, a human rights organization founded by former Portuguese First Lady Maria Barroso Soares. Dr. Pacheco, a lawyer and a member of Reporters Without Borders has extensive experience in African, Portuguese and international media. Besides having created various radio programs and magazines that focus on migrant and human rights issues, he has published articles and books on migrant workers in South Africa and on human trafficking between Mozambique and South Africa .
The objective of the colloquium is to engage members of the media, local organizations, and the immigrant, academic and general community in a discussion about the relationship between the media and the status of migrant women.
After brief presentations, there will be general discussion sessions focusing on the themes of "Media and Community Problems: Views of the Media in Portugal and in the Diaspora" and "The Image of the Migrant Women in the Media."
In addition to addressing the issues presented by the panelists, the discussion sessions will explore the possibility of future collaborations between ProDignitate and Mulher Migrante and local institutions, including the local media. Some of these collaborations may involve internships in Portugal and the organization of local events such as seminars and trainings on media and women's rights.
