UMass Dartmouth student Bryan O'Brien of Marshfield has earned the Washington Center Internship Scholarship presented by Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.

O'Brien was one of four students chosen nationally based on academic merit and public service. He received $4,500 to participate in the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars this summer.

"This is an awesome opportunity. The Treasury is so exciting right now. My boss is amazing, my work is meaningful and the other interns are just great. D.C. is a fun city and I'm absolutely thrilled to be here," O'Brien said.

In addition to a double major in political science and economics and a minor in international business, O'Brien was a member of the Student Senate, helped under served children in New Bedford, volunteered for several service projects and earned a 3.7 G.P.A.

Associate Professor and Chairman of the Political Science Department Michael Baum describes his former student as "very bright, personable and community and civic-minded. He's the poster boy for UMass Dartmouth."

O'Brien is interning as an employee and labor relations assistant in the Department of Treasury until August 15. His job includes managing employee and labor relations cases, conducting research, preparing and disseminating training materials, and assisting in the organization of special events. His immediate career plans include working in Japan recruiting for the IT industry. Long-range goals involve earning an MBA or law degree.

The Washington Center, founded in 1975, is the largest full-time internship program in the nation's capital, serving more than 1,500 students each year.
