The SouthCoast Alliance -- a consortium of area business, media and service organizations -- will present a U.S. Senate Democratic primary forum on Saturday, December 5 at 10 a.m. at the Main Auditorium at UMass Dartmouth, just three days prior to voters going to the polls.

Admission to the 90-minute forum is free of charge and open to all students, staff and faculty of the university as well as the general public. Doors will opens at 9 a.m. Large groups should call the Office of Public Affairs at 508.999.8015 to reserve a block of seats. Parking for the forum will be in Lots 6 and 7.

U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, Attorney General Martha Coakley, City Year co-founder Alan Khazei, and Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca have all indicated that they will participate in the forum. The forum will include the opportunity for each candidate to discuss the economy, education, health care and the environment. The Alliance is also planning to hold a second forum featuring the Democratic and Republican nominees prior to the January 19 special election.

Jim Mathes, Executive Director of SMILES, a SouthCoast mentoring program, will serve as the moderator for the forum. Mathes, former leader of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, was selected by organizers because of his knowledge of the issues facing the region and his work throughout Greater New Bedford and Fall River. ''This is a wonderful opportunity for the SouthCoast to hear from four people who aspire to represent Massachusetts in the United States Senate, and for those candidates to learn about the challenges and aspirations of our region,'' Mathes said.

The SouthCoast Alliance seeks to focus the attention of decision-makers on the issues of importance to the citizens of the SouthCoast. In 2006, the Alliance sponsored the final forum of the gubernatorial campaign.

The Alliance includes the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Herald News of Fall River, Standard Times of New Bedford,  Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, Women's Fund, Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, WSAR-AM of Fall River and WBSM-AM of New Bedford.

Sponsors of the event include the Standard Times of New Bedford,  Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, Women's Fund, Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, and the New Bedford Economic Development Council.
