Date: January 8, 2014
Department: Civic Engagement
The screening presentation is also part of an Anti-Hunger Campaign, launched by UMass Dartmouth's SouthCoast Serves, as an addition to its Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service project. The MLK Day of Service is January 20, 2014. This year, SouthCoast Serves hopes to echo Dr. King's anti-poverty message by encouraging service and volunteerism around the issue of food security.
For those interested in participating in the campaign, SouthCoast Serves encourages the following actions:
* Volunteer by "adopting a food project" by visiting
http://www.volunteersouthcoast.org/ to search for opportunities to serve.
* Attend a screening of the documentary A Place at the Table, which details the state of food insecurity and a hunger crisis in the United States.
* Participate in an Art Exhibit and Auction that will be on display from January 20 to February 2, 2014, spending one week in New Bedford at First Pilgrim Church and the second week at Fall River City Hall. During this time there will be an opening and closing reception in each city, as well as, an online auction of the artwork to help participating food justice programs. Artists chosen to participate will receive a stipend and can also receive a portion of the amount their work is sold for.
