UMass Dartmouth produces TV ads to promote shellfish following red tide crisis

The UMass Dartmouth Center for Business Research is leading a TV advertising effort to encourage consumers to eat shellfish again

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center For Business Research is leading a television advertising effort to encourage consumers to start eating shellfish again following the recent Red Tide crisis. The ad was produced for the Cape Cod Cultured Shellfish Growers.

"In television ads that began airing today on the Comcast cable network throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, consumers are delivered a clear message about the joys of eating clams and other edible mollusks now that the Red Tide is over," said Dr. Nora Barnes, director of the Center and narrator of the ads. "We view this as an important public service that the University is providing to an industry that is critical to the economic and social well-being of Massachusetts."

Filmed by UMass Dartmouth Photographics Department Heather Tripp, the ad features footage of workers harvesting shellfish.

The Center for Business Research, located at the University’s Charlton College of Business, has been providing grant-funded marketing assistance to the shellfish industry the past three years.

The commercial will air on Comcast cable stations over the next 4 weeks. It will air a total of 660 times on CNN, ESPN, Bravo, and other channels shown in the Cape Cod, Fall River, New Bedford, and Middleboro market areas.
