Press Release: UMass Dartmouth alumni to honor six for service and excellence during Homecoming Weekend

The Alumni Association honorees are:
State Senator Joan M. Menard – University Service Award
Sen. Joan M. Menard, D- Fall River, was first elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 1999, following 21 years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Sen. Menard continued to break barriers for women in politics in 1993 when she was elected the first woman to serve as chairperson of the Massachusetts Democratic Committee. Among the issues paramount to Menard in her role as a state senator are childcare, education, disability pension reform, domestic violence, and senior pharmacy assistance programs. Sen. Menard was an elementary school and special education teacher from 1967 – 1974, and also served as Director of Special Education for the Town of Somerset.
Lee Blake – Alumni Employee Award
Lee Blake is the director of the SouthCoast Education Compact, a consortium of local school superintendents, community leaders and business executives based at UMass Dartmouth and devoted to improving the educational attainment levels throughout the SouthCoast. Ms. Blake is also the vice president of the New Bedford Historical Society and president of the Martha Briggs Educational Club, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year.
Dr. James Kaput – University Service Award (Posthumously)
The late Dr. James Kaput, who passed away this summer, was a global leader in the effort to improve the teaching of math. He was the inventor of SimCalc (Simulations for Calculus Learning), a revolutionary method of democratizing the teaching of calculus. Dr. Kaput served on the faculty of UMass Dartmouth for 36 years.
Norma and William Markey – Alumni Service Award
Norma (class of 1954) and William (class of 1955) Markey, both graduates of the New Bedford Textile Institute, spearheaded the revival of the Pioneers Society, a group of alumni who graduated from the two original textile schools that eventually joined to become UMass Dartmouth. Norma Markey is a retired teacher who taught in New Bedford public school, and William Markey is a former public school principal in Fairhaven.
Robert Leduc – Personal Achievement Award
Robert F. Leduc was named president of Hamilton Sundstrand’s Flight Systems business in December 2004 after serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer of United Technologies’ Pratt & Whitney division. Hamilton Sundstrand is a market leader in the design, manufacture and service of military, commercial and business aircraft systems. Leduc has full responsibility for Hamilton Sundstrand’s actuation; propeller; and Space, Land & Sea businesses. Leduc also sits on the boards of Ratier-Figeac of France, Microtecnica of Italy, and Claverham of the United Kingdom.
