Press Release: Center for University, School and Community Partnerships receives $54,000 grant from NEH

"Visions of Slavery and Freedom in the Writings of Lydia Maria Child, Frederick Douglass, Herman Melville and Harriet Jacobs" offers a series of interdisciplinary presentations, workshops and field trips to 20 teachers of history, social studies, American literature and English language arts from the public, and private schools in southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
Led by Lead Scholar Laurie Robertson-Lorant, PhD, Education Department, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the workshops provide an opportunity for teachers to study with university professors and independent scholars who are experts in their fields. Teacher-participants will attend monthly Saturday sessions from January-May, 2006, with a four-day session in June, 2006.
Through the workshops, teachers will learn how to integrate primary sources into their classrooms, enabling their students to understand the complex interrelationship between history and literature. In addition, because three of the four authors Douglass, Melville and Jacobs had direct ties to New Bedford, teachers will learn strategies to spark students' interest in local history and culture.
Teachers participating in the workshops receive a $500 stipend, all core texts and a journal. Professional development points will be awarded, and graduate course credit from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth can be obtained for a fee.
