Cambridge, MA - UMass Dartmouth's Jon Garcia (Stoneham, MA) broke his own school record and finished first in the 11- meter hurdles at the 2006 Open New England Track and Field Championships Friday afternoon at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Running in the second of two time trials, Garcia posted a winning time of :14.52 seconds to break the record he shared with Eric Lopes set two years ago as a freshman of :14.54. Lopes had held the school record since 1992.
A three-time NCAA Division III All-America and a Division III national champion in the 55-meter hurdles earlier this year, Garcia has already qualified for the Division III outdoor national championships later this month. He will attempt to reach All-American status for a fourth straight national event.
"Jon ran really well today," said Corsair coach Jon Hird. "He is the kind of runner who really enjoys competition. He looks forward to races like today and next week at the ECAC Championships. He points his entire season towards these races."
The Open New Englands feature athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions throughout New England. Yudehwe Ghaa of the University of Rhode Island was second at :14.57 and Joseph Adu of Bowdoin was third at :14.99. Due to the weather forecast for Saturday, two time trials were held with the final places in the event determined by times in the trials. There was no final championship race.
With the victory and time of :14.52 on Friday, Garcia moves up in the national rankings within the NCAA Divison III for the 110-meter hurdles. Garcia entered the Open New New Englands ranked eighth and moved up to sixth with his finish on Friday.
"If he can run like he did today, he's going to win a lot of races," said Hird. "When it counts the most, that's when Jon runs his best. In most races by the time he's hit the fifth hurdle he's ahead of the field. That's why racing against competition like this is important because this will make him work harder to get better."
Garcia will attempt to move up again in the NCAA rankings next weekend when he competes in the ECAC Championships being held at Springfield College.
