Press Release: Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture to host forum at Library of Congress, May 19
Date: May 17, 2006
Department: Center for Portuguese Studies
Included in the program will be the launching of a 680-page double issue of the journal Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies, one of the most important collections of essays ever published in the United States on the Brazilian writer. The volume, although published by UMass Dartmouth, is the result of a collaborative effort between faculty at UMass Dartmouth and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
Following the colloquium--which will be attended by UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack and UMass system Vice President for Academic Affairs Marcellette Williams--the President of UERJ and the Embassy of Brazil will host a reception in honor of UMass Dartmouth and its contributions to Brazilian Studies.
"This is another impressive example of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture shining a spotlight on a wonderfully rich culture while building a new bridge between our Commonwealth, our university, and Brazil," Chancellor MacCormack said.
Prof. Frank F. Sousa, director of the center, said, "The hope is that this collaborative effort between UMass Dartmouth and UERJ will lead to exchange of faculty and students in the future."
The journal will be launched in Brazil this summer at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and the University of São Paulo.
