Garcia Fourth at NCAA Track Championships, Earns All-America Honors
Junior Jon Garcia (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track team earned his fourth consecutive All-American honor by finishing fourth in the 110 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at The Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

LISLE, IL- Junior Jon Garcia (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track team surpassed his own school record for the third consecutive race and earned his fourth consecutive All-American honor at the 110 meter hurdle finals at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at The Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
Garcia finished fourth overall in the race with a time of 14.20 seconds. The times for the race were all considered wind-aided, since the wind was measured at three meters per second. Since his time was wind-aided, the record he set Friday in the trials, 14.44 seconds, will remain the school record.
Marcus Walgrave of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, who had the fastest qualifying time in Friday's trials, finished first in 13.98 seconds. Walgrave was the runner-up to Garcia indoors in March. John Fudge of Lincoln (PA) was second in 14.07 seconds, while Paul Klemic of Richard Stockton, who finished ahead of Garcia in the second heat of Friday's trials and was last year's runner-up at nationals, finished third in 14.18 seconds.
"The final wasn't anything like the trials, they were flying," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "Jon's first five hurdles were the fastest he's ever run. Jon has lowered his time in each race he has run."
The winners of each of Friday's three heats were placed in the middle three lanes for the finals, and Garcia, who had the fourth best time, was placed in lane three, hampering his ability to see the leaders.
"I lead with my right leg, so it was very hard for me to see the top three runners," said Garcia. "I knew that it was important to get out of the blocks fast and get over the first hurdle so my momentum would keep me going and help me continue past the other hurdles. My momentum carried me through the first five hurdles, and I was gaining a little bit each time, but I didn't gain enough at the end to catch the first three hurdlers. All the times were really fast, and all of them are really good athletes, and I'm thankful for the time that I had."
Garcia earned the fourth All-America honor of his career with Saturday's fourth-place finish. He previously earned All-America honors by finishing first in the 55-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships this spring, finishing seventh in the 55-meter hurdles at the 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, and finishing sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2005 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships..
