STEVEN LEAHY - BFA in Illustration, 1991
On his work:
Currently, I am the owner of Leahy Illustration, my own studio in Stoughton, Massachusetts. I am also an avid airbrush artist, and I spend a great deal of time teaching classes or giving demonstrations about this unique art form.
On his recent accomplishments:
Since graduating from UMass Dartmouth, I have been fortunate enough to win awards with the National Acrylic Painters Association, The Experimental Aircraft Association and the Society of Illustrators. I currently write a regular article for Airbrush Magazine
and my work has been featured in Airbrush Action Magazine, Airbrush Art and Action
and Naval Aviation News
. This past October I was invited to assist artist Mike Learn in a weeklong airbrush workshop in Norway.
On his proudest achievement as an artist:
I think my proudest moment as an artist was being asked to paint at the opening of Dave Perewitz' new shop in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Perewitz Cycle Fabrication is one of the world's most renowned custom shops, and the chance to work alongside some of the best artists in the entire custom motorcycle industry that weekend was a memory I will always carry with me.
My time in the CVPA was more than an education, it was a passageway. I went from having this intangible dream of being an artist to learning the direction and plan for making that dream come true. At UMass Dartmouth, I was surrounded by people that understood my need to create art and they were able to show me the necessary steps to translate that need to a viable career. Above all, my illustration instructors really put things into focus for me.
On lessons learned in the "real world":
The success of your career is in direct proportion to the effort that you put into it.
Advice for today's students:
With your work, learn to listen to the critiques and opinions of the faculty and your fellow students. When you are able to look at your work through someone else's eyes, your growth as an artist will be exponential.
