Overview
The ATMC Materials Lab was established in 1990 as part of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Civil
and Environmental Engineering Department. Since its inception, the lab’s main objective has been to assist
state agencies, private contractors, and the entire pavement community in designing and evaluating asphalt
pavements mixtures that lead to better performing roads.
In order to better serve their existing clientele and provide cutting edge services, the materials
lab joined the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center
(ATMC) in the Fall of 2001. This newly designed lab is directed by Dr. Walaa Mogawer, P.E., a
professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Mogawer has more than 20 years of experience
in pavement design, maintenance, and rehabilitation. In addition, the lab is complimented with numerous
college interns from the Civil and Environmental Engineering program.
The lab is equipped to offer services for aggregate testing, asphalt binder testing, Hot Mix Asphalt
(HMA) testing and verification, and SuperPave hot mix asphalt designs and verifications. In addition
to being up-to-date with the latest AASHTO practices and test procedures, the lab is equipped with the
latest testing equipment and technology.
Completed projects at the ATMC Materials Lab have helped establish a working partnership with many state/local
agencies and private companies. For a complete list of the lab's clients visit our clients page.
