College of Engineering

University Collaborative for Intelligent Transportation Systems (UC-- ITS)

The Collaborative was proposed in April 2007 by four faculty and will have a geographical reach to all corners of the Commonwealth: Marguerite Zarrillo of UMass Dartmouth, Nathan Gartner of UMass Lowell, John Collura of UMass Amherst and Tomas Materday of UMass Boston. The objectives include the advancement of technology and expertise in the many disciplines comprising transportation through the mechanisms of education, research and technology transfer. The Collaborative will address infrastructure development and maintenance around the state through a coordinated education program focusing on the Commonwealth's needs. This organization will build a framework that will connect transportation industries, consultants and government with campuses of the University of Massachusetts.

The Collaborative will identify partners, seek grant proposal opportunities, and get legislators on board to develop innovative approaches to transportation in the Commonwealth. Stakeholders meetings are planned and will be announced in the near future. Please contact Prof. Zarrillo at for more information.

The UMass campuses are the major supplier of well educated and trained personnel in the transportation arena in Massachusetts.  On the education side, the new Collaborative will lead to the development of new university based engineering programs in transportation, a new UMass Certificate Program in ITS, and new training for government and industry transportation personnel. This initiative will be an integral component in the education and training of new and existing transportation professionals who can move the Commonwealth forward using innovative ITS technologies in combination with creative institutional strategies.
