College of Engineering welcomes new faculty members

The College of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of four new Assistant Professors: Dr. Kelly Pennell and Dr. Mazdak Tootkaboni in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dr. Xiaole Bai in the Department of Computer and Information Science and Dr. Mehdi Raessi in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Pennell earned a Ph.D. in 2005 from Purdue University in civil (environmental) engineering.  She has also worked as an environmental consultant and held a research faculty position at Brown University (2005-2010).  Dr. Pennell's research is aimed at better understanding the fate and transport of environmental contaminants.  She is particularly interested in connecting research, practice and policy, such that health risks can be better characterized and mitigated.

Dr. Tootkaboni received his Ph.D. in structural mechanics from the Johns Hopkins University in 2009.  His research lies at the intersection of computational mechanics and applied probability and statistics.  He develops numerical schemes that combine recent advances in stochastic modeling and applied statistics with the existing methods in computational mechanics to better understand and improve the mechanical properties and multi-scale behavior of materials and structures.

Dr. Bai received his Ph.D. in computer science and engineering at The Ohio State University in 2009 where he received Outstanding Graduate Research Award.  His current research interests are in the areas of wireless network science and engineering, cyber space security, and mobile handsets-based social intelligent computing.

Dr. Raessi earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Toronto in 2008 and then he completed a post-doctoral appointment at NASA/Stanford University Center for Turbulence Research.  His research focus is primarily on numerical modeling of multiphase flows and free-surface flows with phase change.  Applications include thermal spray coating and liquid atomization processes.

We extend a warm welcome to our newest colleagues!
