DARTMOUTH Dr. Howard E. Michel, Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been elected Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 1 Director-elect for 2006 and 2007 and Director for 2008 and 2009. As Director, Dr. Michel will be responsible for technical and professional activities for 40,000 members in eight states.
Dr. Michel states that he is pleased and honored to have won this election. He plans to use the resources of the Region to build an awards program to broadly recognize engineers and their employers for technical and professional excellence, and improve the image of engineering as a profession. Michel states that this is critical if we are to entice young people into engineering as a career, and to maintain the technical advantage that is the basis for many of the successes we currently enjoy.
In addition to managing activities in Region 1, Dr. Michel will serve on the IEEE Board of Directors along with nine other region directors from around the world, 10 technical division directors and IEEE officers.
The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society with over 365,000 members in approximately 150 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric power and consumer electronics. The IEEE has ten regions worldwide. Region 1 of the IEEE covers the northeast US including New York, northern and central New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Dr. Michel has been an IEEE member for over 31 years and active in IEEE leadership positions in both Region 1 and Region 6 (western US). These leadership positions include: Providence Section Chair, Central New England Council Chair, Region 1 Northeast Area Chair, and Providence Section Program Chair, Educational Activities Chair, and Professional Activities Chair.
