Dr. John Buck Awarded Research Grant by Office of Naval Research

Dr. John Buck from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded a research grant totally $234,000 by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in March 2007. The grant titled 'Cepstral signal processing for modeling bat biosonar' will support Dr. Buck's research on auditory processing in the big brown bat's echolocation system. The research insights gained in this project are expected to help design improved signal processing algorithms for man-made sonar systems. In this project, Dr. Buck  will continue to collaborate closely with Professor James Simmons, Professor of Neuroscience at Brown University. The grant which runs from April 2007 to December 2009 will help support graduate students in the department. Dr. Buck has been awarded several research grants by ONR in recent years. This includes the prestigious ONR Young Investigator award granted to Dr. Buck in 2000. Dr. Buck's research interests are in the areas of animal bioacoustics, underwater acoustics and signal processing. Dr. Buck also holds a joint position with the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMaST).
