Dr. Yifei Li was awarded a $550,000 research grant (April 2008 to July 2009), by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). The grant, titled "Monolithic Photonic Phase Locked Loop Utilizing ACP Phase Modulator", was funded through the DARPA PHOR-FRONT which is a multi-institution / multi-million-dollar program led by Prof. John Bowers at University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Li joined the ECE department in September 2007 as an assistant professor. His research interests are in the field of RF/Photonics. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
This research aims to develop a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that performs high speed, ultra-linear optical phase demodulation. The PIC device contains a novel latency free ACP QCSE optical phase modulator, high power/high bandwidth uni-carrier traveling wave photodiodes, and RF/optical interconnects. Once realized, it is expected to bring the much needed dynamic range (>147dB∙Hz2/3) to radar frontend, and significantly enhances the processing power of the next generation radar receivers. In this project, Dr. Li will collaborate closely with Prof. Peter Herczfeld, Prof. Arye Rosen at Drexel University, and Prof. John Bowers at University of California, Santa Barbara.
