Dr. Liudong Xing, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer (ECE) was awarded the Scholar of the Year award for 2010. She was nominated for this award by the ECE department chairperson, Dr. Dayalan Kasilingam. Dr. Xing received her award at the annual Faculty Federation banquet on December 7th 2010.
Dr. Xing joined the ECE department in September 2002, as an assistant professor. She was tenured and promoted to associate professor in 2008. The ECE department, which had the first stand-alone PhD program at UMD, hired Dr. Xing to build up its research program and she has more than lived up to the department's expectations.
Dr. Xing's research interests are in the field of reliability engineering and fault-tolerant computing. She has published extensively in the field and is one of the most prolific scholars in the college of engineering. She has published 33 journal papers, 51 conference papers and 2 book chapters. One of her papers was judged the Best Paper at the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Networking, Architecture, and Storage in July, 2009. This paper is considered a seminal piece of research in the field reliability of sensor networks.
Two of her journal papers, have been the #1 and #3 accessed articles in the IEEE Transactions on Reliability in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Dr. Xing is also extremely active in professional service. She has been editor and associate editor of several journals. She has also served on review panels for National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
Dr. Xing has been able to leverage her scholarly and research success into advising high quality graduate students. She has been the advisor for 31 MS students and 5 PhD students at UMD. One of her PhD students -- Dr. Akhilesh Shrestha was awarded second place in the IEEE Region I Graduate Student Paper Contest in 2006.
Dr. Xing's numerous scholarly and professional awards are testimony to her national and international reputation in her field of research. Besides the best paper award, she was also the recipient of the IEEE Region I Technological Innovation award in 2007. She was recognized for 'outstanding technical innovations in the field of reliability computing'.
