ECE graduate students, Renyuan Wang and Mohammad Ali won the first prize in the IEEE international student design competition, for which they designed an Optical-to-Microwave Convertor. The competition was held at the 2010 International Microwave Symposium, in Anaheim, CA. The "optical-to-microwave converter" student design competition was sponsored by IEEE MTT-3 Microwave Photonics subcommittee. In this competition, each student team was required to design an 1~3GHz optical-to-microwave converter with greater than 10% bandwidth by combining power from four low-cost photodetectors supplied by Linear Photonics. The design goal is to achieve greater than 20dBm RF output power and greater than 5% power efficiency. Renyuan's converter design achieved the highest output RF power. Renyuan Wang and Mohammad Ali were advised by Dr. Yifei Li of the ECE department.
Dr. Yifei Li joined the ECE department in September 2007. He is one the College of Engineering's top young researchers. His research interests are in the field of RF/Photonics. Dr. Li has brought in more than a million dollars in research funding in four short years. He won the highly competitive 2008 Young Faculty Award of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The award consists of a seed grant of $150,000 to advance high-risk, 'revolutionary research ideas that are critical to future technology developments'. In the same year, Dr. Li was awarded a $550,000 research grant by DARPA. In 2010, he won another research grant from DARPA for $200,000 and was the co-PI on a Department of Defense DURIP grant for $236,000. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
