Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Liudong Xing, together with her collaborators Dr. Vinod Vokkarane (co-PI from CIS department) and Dr. Yan Sun (PI from the University of Rhode Island) received a new National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant to study the reliability of wireless sensor networks. The award titled "CSR: Small: Collaborative Research: Bridging Reliability Analysis and Reality in Sensor Systems: Theories and Applications" was awarded by the Computer Systems Research program of NSF and is for three years from August 2011 through July 2014. The award totals $425,000 ($261,616 for UMass Dartmouth and $163,384 for URI). Dr. Xing is the lead principle investigator for the project.
The research goal of this project is to close the gap between traditional network reliability analysis theories and realistic sensor network system environments through new reliability theories, models, methodologies, and software tools. The results of this project are expected to assist the design and operation of reliable sensor networks and contribute to the network reliability research and industry.
Dr. Xing has a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Virginia. She joined the department of electrical and computer engineering as an assistant professor in 2002. She was promoted to associate professor in 2008. Dr. Xing research interests are in the field of reliability engineering and fault-tolerant computing. She has published extensively in the field and is one of the most prolific scholars in the college of engineering. In 2007, she was recognized by Region 1 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for her outstanding technical innovations in the field of Reliability Engineering. The IEEE is the leading professional organization for electrical engineers and computer engineers. In 2010, Dr. Xing was awarded the UMD Scholar of the Year award for her outstanding contributions to research in reliability engineering.
