Dr. Yifei Li of the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) received a three-year $400k research grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). This new grant will support Dr. Li's research efforts in developing Monolithic Microwave Photonic Integrated Circuits (MMPIC). The MMPICs are monolithically integrated circuit chip that perform microwave signal processing functions using their internal photonic mechanism. The ultimate goal is to develop microwave photonic sub-systems on integrated circuit chips that are capable of performing better than either currently available or presently evolving electronic counterparts. This grant follows the one million-dollar grant awarded to Dr. Li by the Air Force Office of Research (AFOSR) in 2012, to conduct fundamental research in Radio Frequency (RF)/Photonic integrated circuits.
Dr. Li received his Ph.D. from Drexel University in 2003. In 2007, he joined the ECE department as an assistant professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in September 2012. He has previously been funded in the field of RF/Photonics by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He was awarded the prestigious DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2008. Dr. Li has four US patents in the area of RF/Photonics.
