ECE Faculty Member Running for President of IEEE

IEEE, the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology, has announced a slate of two candidates for 2014 President-elect, 2015 President and CEO.  UMass Dartmouth Associate Professor Howard E. Michel is one of the two.  

Michel is an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts, in North Dartmouth. His research interests include artificial neural networks and distributed-intelligence sensor networks. He holds two patents and has published a textbook, 15 refereed journal papers, 43 conference papers and 27 posters or abstracts.   He has graduated 3 Ph.D. students and 35 MS students.  Additionally, Michel is an embedded instrumentation and system-architecture consultant to the U.S. Navy.  Michel is a resident of North Dartmouth, MA.

Michel was vice president, IEEE Member and Geographic Activities, in 2011 and 2012, and Region 1 director in 2008 and 2009.  He was the 2010 chair of the IEEE Public Visibility Committee. He was also on the board of directors of IEEE-USA in 2008 and 2009.

Michel retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1994 as an engineering manager.  During his Air Force career, he was a pilot, research engineer and satellite launch director.  Michel oversaw operations to launch seven satellites and directing launch-base tests involving booster, satellite, and range hardware, including two satellites launched in the People's Republic of China.
