Concrete Canoe Competition hosted by UMass Dartmouth, April 29-30

Innovative students and faculty from UMass Dartmouth and 10 other universities will gather this weekend to participate in the New England 2006 Regional Concrete Canoe Competition. Engineering students from across New England will make the impossible a reality: design, build and race canoes made of concrete.

The UMass Dartmouth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is hosting the event, which challenges the students' design and problem solving skills and knowledge.

The presentations will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at the UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts Building, Room 153. Teams will be judged on the content of the design papers, the oral presentations of the canoe, the aesthetics of the canoe, and the results of the races.

The races will be held Sunday at Apponagansett Point Park in Padanaram Village of South Dartmouth, beginning at 11 a.m.  There will be five races: a three-man slalom, a three-woman slalom, a two-man sprint, a two-woman sprint, and a two-man/two-woman coed sprint.

Participating universities include: UMass Dartmouth, UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, University of Rhode Island, University of New Hampshire, University of Maine, University of Hartford, University of New Haven, Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
