Professors Paul Calvert and Alex Fowler received a $150,000 award from the UMass President's Science and Technology Fund in order to strengthen the College's research and development efforts in Bioengineering. This award will be used to build and strengthen collaborations between UMass Dartmouth researchers and other researchers in the region to create a virtual center of excellence with the critical mass necessary to secure large multi-institutional grants.
The initiative will build on the college's research strengths in biomaterials, cell preservation and rehabilitation engineering to move into areas of tissue engineering and implantable devices.
This effort will be kicked off by a bioengineering symposium this Fall to draw the region's bioengineering researchers together and highlight multi-disciplinary research already underway in these areas.
