ECE Professors Awarded Research Grant by Office of Naval Research for Acoustics Research

ECE professors, Drs. David Brown and Boris Aronov were awarded a research grant totaling $600,000 by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to develop electro-mechanical modeling of piezoelectric cylindrical shells. The grant will support their research on acoustical transducers, in particular, piezoelectric cylindrical shells and their dependence on coupled vibrations and polarization states. The study considers radial, tangential, and axial polarization of ferroelectric elements and predicts performance as a function of cylindrical height-to-diameter aspect ratio. Such elements are practical for electro-acoustic transducers, electro-mechanical actuators and filters. The grant which runs from January 2007 through December 2010 will support graduate student research. Dr. Brown is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and Dr. Aronov is an adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering. Dr. Brown is also the director of the Acoustics Research Laboratory which is located at the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC) in Fall River. The laboratory focuses its research on underwater acoustics, acoustic transduction, transducer devices and arrays and acoustic properties of materials. The laboratory has been supported by research grants from ONR totaling over a million dollars.
