On February 29th, the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) held the First Starcraft Tournament on campus. The tournament was organized as a part of Engineering Week, which is designed to highlight engineering education and professional development. Students from a variety of different departments around campus participated in the event. There were a total of 23 competitors. The following were the winners:

Champion          : Jarrod Mei (sociology)
First Runner Up   : Joe Marcelynas (computer engineering)
Second Runner Up  : Doug Spink (computer engineering)
Third Runner Up   : Chris Arena (computer science)

The champion was awarded a $200 prize donated by the ECE department. The runners up were given prizes in the form of computer games. President of the UMD chapter of the IEEE, Nick Savery commented :

"The game night was a great success!  All the participants had a great time.  We had a good turn out, and many of the participants commented that we should do this again soon.  It was great to have the support of the ECE department which allowed us to make this a better event than we could have done alone"

Besides Nick Savery, others involved in organizing this event included IEEE office bearers, Yvonne Chan and Julian Plante. The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. It has over 365,000 members in 160 countries. The department and the IEEE chapter hope to make this an annual event.
