Dr. John Buck, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the Leo M. Sullivan Teacher of the Year award for 2008. Dr. Buck joined the ECE department in 1996 and in the past twelve years has built an outstanding record in both teaching and research. He has maintained an uncompromising commitment to classroom excellence while pursuing a very successful research enterprise.
On many occasions, Dr. Buck scored a perfect 5/5 in student evaluation of teaching in his classes. A perfect 5/5 is a rarity in the ECE department. Besides this obvious numerical superiority, he has consistently been given some of the most complimentary comments in these evaluations.
Dr. Buck has also co-authored two books. Both books have been adopted by several universities in the United States. They have also been translated into Mandarin, Spanish and German. His books have brought him national recognition and acclaim.
Dr. Buck also developed the Signals and Systems Concept Inventory (SSCI), which is used widely for assessing learning in the area of signals and systems. This has become the de facto standard for assessing learning and has been adopted by more than 15 universities.
Dr. Buck's outstanding teaching record has been recognized by external organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). In 2005, he was awarded the IEEE Education Society's Mac Van Valkenburg Award for 'outstanding contributions to electrical and computer engineering education, including inspirational classroom teaching and the development of exemplary education materials'.
Dr. Buck has also been awarded several research grants by ONR and NSF in recent years. These include the prestigious ONR Young Investigator award and the NSF CAREER award. Dr. Buck's research interests are in the areas of animal bioacoustics, underwater acoustics and signal processing. Dr. Buck also holds a joint position with the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMaST).
