Chancellor Professor Chi Hau Chen Awarded New Navy Grant
Dr. Chi Hau Chen was awarded a $8000 research grant by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, Rhode Island, to study Generic Pseudo Random Bioacoustic Signals. The award is from March 1st, 2010 to September 30th 2010. Dr. Chen's research interests are in the areas of pattern recognition, image and signal processing and information processing in remote sensing. He made major fundamental contributions in the field of statistical pattern recognition and its applications. His contributions were recognized by being awarded IEEE Fellow in 1988, and Fellow of International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in 1996. In the early 1980's, he pioneered the use of signal processing and pattern recognition in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of materials, for which he received an Army grant in 1983. He was elected to Full Member of Academia NDT International in 2009 (an international society with some 70 elite members). Among his other professional activities are his service as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing for 15 years and Associate Editor of International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence for 23 years. Dr. Chen will be retiring from the ECE department at the end of the 2010 academic year.
