Dr. Amit Tandon, Associate Professor of the Physics Department presents at the ICES Annual Science Conference 2008

Associate Professor Dr. Amit Tandon attended his first International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Annual Science Conference which was held in Halifax, Canada Sept. 22-26th, 2008. Dr. Tandon presented a paper in collaboration with Dr. Brian Rothschild and Jason Olejarz on "Variability of linear non-local spectral ecosystem model due to nutrient donor-nutrient acceptor interaction characteristics."  

In this work, they examined how the nutrient donor and acceptor interaction govern the efficiency of the ecosystem.  Following earlier size based models they presented a minimal model which will allows a study the difference in efficiency of two models which only differ in the size-dependent predator-prey interaction characteristics. They presented a hierarchy of simple spectral biomass energy models starting with local interactions, and leading up to a new non-local but linear spectral ecosystem model. They showed that predator-prey interaction characteristics make the ecosystem more efficient. These interactions also introduce a time variability, particularly when the size-spectra of
an ecosystem gets perturbed. A local perturbation at very small sizes is shown to introduce variability at larger sizes.
