Course Plan for Multidisciplinary Major in Women's Studies & English
ENL 300: British Literature 1
This class compliments the English Literature component of my multidisciplinary major covering Beowulf to 1798. British Literature 1 will also cover the cultural and historical events occurring at the same time as the literature is being written. This course gives a basis to British Literature and was preparation for further British Literature courses.
British Literature 2 covers from 1798 to the mid-20th Century. The course will provide a continuation in study of British literature as well as the complimentary history and culture furthering the English Literature component of my multidisciplinary major.
ENL 303: American Literature
American Literature 1 lays a foundation for the American literature studies under the English Literature major. The course spans Colonial American literature to Civil War literature with a focus on philosophical, cultural,, and historical developments that parallel the literature.
ENL 304: American Literature 2
This course is a study of American Literature from the Civil War to the present and will be preparation for ENL 400, a seminar in American Literature. This course covers the literature as well as the culture, history and philosophy reflected in the literature.
ENL 400: Seminar in American Literature
This seminar is the final course in the literature aspect of my major and is required of all seniors in their major. This course will be a compliment to my capstone course at the 400 level in Women's Studies.
WMS 300: Gender and Communication
This course will apply to my Women's studies major as well as exposing me to communication skills. The benefits of these skills include improvement in my rhetorical and verbal communications skills.
WMS 305: Contemporary Feminist Theory & Practice
This class gives an overview of the Second and Third wave feminist movements and the theories that evolved from them. As a component in the Women's Studies part of my major this course is an introductory to the major feminist theories and the practice of them.
WMS 336: Women and Social Policy
This class will have not only a Women's Studies component but also has a sociology/anthropology cross listing. Women and Social Policy will allow me to study the policies that affect women and the family and compare them to other countries policies.
This upper level class will enable me to investigate more fully the themes and issues discussed in WMS 246. The course will also introduce me to key research skills, including a literature review assignment and a detailed oral presentation. Further, the course focuses on my intended area of graduate study in Women's Studies, feminist theory, and women's literature.
WMS 495: Capstone Independent Study
This course will act as the culmination of my degree program. In it I will prepare a portfolio spanning my work in the Women's Studies and English Literature programs. This portfolio will then be accompanied by an oral presentation to a committee of Women's Studies and English professors.
