Call for Entry
Deadline: The search will continue into the spring 2007 semester until an artist is selected.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has undertaken an important project this year that will add an interesting dimension to the campus look and feel - A Faculty Leadership Walkway. The Walkway will be between the Library and Student Center. The desire is to honor faculty leadership qualities, such as: commitment, curiosity, ethics, inspiration, motivation, passion, resourcefulness, and vision.
- The Walkway will be a visual representation of faculty leadership including a centerpiece within a primary seating area - next to the Library - that will be a place to reflect. Some initial thoughts about the centerpiece, include: abstract; three dimensional design; materials (consistent with New England) could include: stone, glass, slate, wrought iron, etc.; ascending/vertical centerpiece; possibly with water; and attractive lighting (both discreet)
- Quotes will be selected and placed along the Walkway that will be a cause for pause and wonder.
- Individual tenured faculty names will be displayed somewhere along the walkway, possibly on pavers.
Please submit up to 20 examples of past relevant work in slide or .jpeg format as well as sketches of a potential artistic object for the centerpiece at the primary seating. All submissions will be reviewed by the team and a decision will be made to engage an artist who meets criteria such as: provides a centerpiece/sculpture that complements the entire Walkway; attracts and 'moves' people; includes compelling artistic presentation; and delivers final product within budget. Upload examples of your most recent work as well as sketches of a potential artistic object for the centerpiece at the primary seating area.
The team assigned to this project will select an artist who can design, create, build and deliver a centerpiece/sculpture that is part of a completed walkway with an overall budget of $80,000 - $100,000 (subject to final approval & funding).
Here are two pictures of the Walkway: (1) one end of the Walkway looking toward the Library, and (2) the end of the Walkway at the 'primary' circular seating area next to the Library.
