The New England Woodland Garden, planted in memory of Jesse B. Frizzell, is nestled between the Counseling Center and the upper level entrance to the Auditorium.
The garden was designed and installed by biology professor Jim Sears and his students of his spring term class "Horticulture" in 1999. Over $1000 in gifts to the UMD Foundation in memory of Jesse funded the purchase of woody and herbaceous perennial plants characteristic of a New England woodland.
Many are New England natives, e.g. several rhododendrons, blue bells, columbines, ferns and white birch; others like hostas, astilbes and spring flowering bulbs and exotic rhododendrons are typical of woodland habitats with dappled light.
